The sound card ALWAYS performs effects and mixing and outputs the result via analog and a lossless stereo downmix via SPDIF. If you've enabled Dolby/DTS encoding then it additionally encodes the same analog output as lossy digital and pipes it over SPDIF instead of the lossless stereo downmix.
