WebI think surival has actually one more area (same as SoA) than story mode. For the story (though you are under no obligation to be speedy), you don't even need most buildings to finish. Even on harder difficulty, if you know what you are doing. I personally prefer Surival or SoA for exploration, base building and general "just playing".
